Fun Facts About Coconuts
Why did we choose crushed coconut shells to be our product base?
Since the coconut literally grows on trees, it can be called a true renewable resource. The coconuts are harvested three to four times a year providing a steady, renewable carbon resource while also producing oxygen for our air.Â
Coconut shell carbon has many benefits making it the best activated carbon for drinking water purification.  Those natural benefits are:
- Renewable – grows on trees. Coconuts grow in tropical climates and can be preserved for many years. This makes them able to continuously produce carbon, whereas a tree by itself cannot produce more than one supply of wood in its lifetime.
- Highest density of micro-pores for the best mechanical filtration and for the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s.)  In comparison, it contains 50% more micro-pores than bituminous coal. This makes coconut better able to adsorb volatile organic chemicals, which are otherwise difficult to remove from water.
- Natural purity producing the best quality carbon block that is uniform and non-leaching. (Unlike other carbons that can leave an unpleasant taste due to the inorganic ash.)Â Â This is another reason that the coconut outperforms other options in terms of quality.
- Tight structure creating high mechanical strength with increased hardness and resistance to wear – long life.
- The manufacturing of the coconut shell activated carbon is easier than its counterparts. Coal and wood both produce significant amounts of dust and fine carbon particles, while coconut produces less of these potential contaminants. Due to this lack of dust, and to the fact that coconut harvesting is a year-round, renewable activity that does not kill trees, this can be considered a green method of obtaining activated carbon.
